"Live for Today"

NBC's Today Show has recently been featuring a segment entitled "Live for Today." In each installment of "Live for Today" someone is given the opportunity to live out a dream - to pursue an important experience that should not be missed. For instance, Matt took to the road on a Harley.

This has gotten me wondering about important musical experiences that ought not be missed. Two come to mind for me.

1. I think attending a live performance of one of the Mahler Symphonies that includes a chorus (like Nos. 2 or 8) can be a life changing experience.

2. When you have to act on a really difficult decision, try listening to Beethoven Eroica Symphony for a while to gain strength.

Would anyone else like to share their ideas of important musical experiences that are not to be missed?

When I think of musical experiences that have changed my life.. 3 events come to mind..
1. Carmina Burana... the pure energy and vitality of percussion and orchestra interacting with the chorus, seems so instinctive, so elemental...
2. Verdi Requiem: Dies Irae... exemplifies to me the pure terror of the concept of judgement and wrath.
3. Schubert: Shepherd on the rock... piano, clarinet and soprano... during a class at Juilliard, Sari Gruber sang this piece and I was so moved... words cannot express.. the duets between the clarinet and Sari's voice were exquisite... recordings cannot do the work justice... Everyone should hear it live with world class performers...

I have been to subsequent performances of these works, but never attained the initial impact.. perhaps it was the work, perhaps it was the performers... only time will tell
